Another title for the Washington Redskins in 2009

by Matt Ryan

Every season the Washington Redskins can count on the stand being full at every home game and 2009 will be no different. The Redskins are one of those teams that fans adore, partially because of where they are based, but also because they play an amazing game. Over the years the Redskins have accomplished many feats, and fans anticipate this continue to happen as the years go by.

The Washington Redskins first appeared as the Boston Braves and played their first season in 1932. This season, and the few more to come, were nothing worth talking about, let alone watching; they were an embarrassment to the league. In 1936, they began to win a few games; however, it was too late, the city of Boston could no longer financially support and NFL team. This is where the fate of the Redskins changed as they moved to Washington to begin the 1937 season in their new home.

The Washington Redskins have played in numerous championship games, and have brought home five NFL championship titles. They began winning championships back in 1937, when they won their first NFL championship, followed by another NFL championship in 1942. In 1982, they won their first Super Bowl championship, only to win again in 1987 and 1991.

To add to their astonishing record, the Redskins have won five Conference championship titles, and division championship titles 12-times, the first one being in 1936 to the most recent in 1999. They have appeared in the playoff games more than most other teams in the league with a total of 22 appearances. Looking at these numbers, there is no question as to why stands are overflowing with adoring fans at every game.

The Washington Redskins, after their move from Boston, succeeded early on, which got them attention quickly. They are not one of those teams that had to play for years before they began attracting fans. Therefore, their fan base is one of the most loyal in the league. The Redskins suffered a 20-year slow down, but this did not stop they cheering them on at every game.

The Redskins, during this time, had finally accepted integration (they were the last team, in pro football, to do so) when they drafted Ernie Davis (the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy). Davis was later traded for wide receiver Bobby Mitchell, who later became a member of the Hall of Fame. Many other African-American players were welcomed to the team, after they embraced integration, players like Charley Taylor, Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff, and Brig Owens - all of which are well known throughout sports history, and part of what made the Redskins great.

There is no surprise that the value of the Washington Redskins - today - is over 1-billion dollars, and that they are rated as the second most valued - financially - team in the entire NFL. As a team, they bring in the highest yearly revenue in the NFL of $300 million every season. This is due - in part - the their record breaking attendance records 7-years in a row.

With draft picks and trading coming to an end, fans anxiously await the final results. The Redskins already have what it takes to bring home another championship title, but with new blood to strengthen the weaknesses, no other team stands a chance.
