Fun Diesel Pusher Games

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

If you're at point A and you need to get you and your family to point B, Diesel Pushers are a great way to make the trip in luxury. But as anyone who has ever met a child knows, children get bored! After a while computer screens and movies lose their appeal so here are a few good old fashion road games to help you and the kids pass the time when you're on the road.

License plate games - this is a game people have been playing for years and as more and more people take to the road it becomes easier and easier to play. Game players keep an open eye out for license plates from other states keeping track of all the states they see represented. A fun way to keep track of this is by bringing a map of the U.S. along and coloring in the states as you see new plates. This is a great way to keep the kids focused on their surroundings.

Card games - Everybody loves to play card games no matter where they are so why not grab some for the road? Whether your fancy is Old Maid, Go Fish, War or another classic, hours of fun can be had while playing these games. You can buy decks specifically designed for each game or you can just bring along a deck of classic playing cards. Card games are particularly handy because you hold your cards and do not have to worry about balancing a board game. Also you do not have to worry about game pieces getting lost.

Alphabet Games - Alphabet games are surprisingly fun and can potentially be educational. Players scan the road and the surrounding areas looking for needed letters in license plates, road signs, billboards, business signs, anywhere! The first to see all 26 letters of the alphabet wins. Another fun alphabet game is spotting objects that start with a certain letter. Many use categories such as foods or cars to move through the alphabet. Finally there is the classic alphabet game where turns are taken. A category is selected and players take turns naming something within the category going through the alphabet. If the topic was food, one player may start with Avocado and the following player may add Broccoli and so on.

I Spy - We all know the phrase "I spy with my little eye." This is a fun way to get everyone involved as players take turns asking questions and ultimately guessing what the player has spied with their little eye. "Is it alive?" "Does is move?" "Can you eat it?" "It's a Cloud!"

Moo Cow - Count the cows! This is fun and can also be educational as child practice their numbers. And as you drive your diesel pusher through certain areas of the U.S. your cow numbers with get pretty high!

Another great way to pass the time is to simply read. Books can be read by the individual or to a group so everyone can participate. Also many children love classic games like crossword puzzles, word searches and Sudoku. Fun games and good books lead to fun times and entertained passengers regardless of their ages.

There are countless ways for you and your family to pass the time while driving your diesel pusher from A to B then to C and D and on an on but no matter how you choose to do it the important thing is that you are together as a family.

Townsville's faultless blue skies ,long beachfront esplanade means that Queenslands third largest city retains the relaxed tropical atmosphere of its smaller counterparts. It is endowed with a grand coastal position, park lands, purpose built attractions, a lively cafe and restaurant scene and lofty Castle Hill, from whose peak you can survey the lot.

Townsville is home to many fun and exciting attractions. For starters, the Barrier Reef Headquarters are located here. They also have an armed forces base and James Cook University, which increases the night life around town. With numerous restaurants and activities to choose from you will be up till all hours. Some note worthy places are Jupiter's Casino, C Bar and Naked Fish.

In 1864, sea captain Robert Towns commissioned James Black to establish a settlement on Cleveland Bay to service the new inland cattle industry. The many historic buildings found around Cleveland Bay are a reminder of this heritage. It is still a major port for the beef and mining industries. A shameful claim to fame is that the same Robert Towns began the practice of black birding kidnapping Kanakas (South Sea Islanders) from their homeland and bringing them to Australia for cheap labor as European were considered inherently unsuited to work in the tropics .The Kanakas were primarily used in the Sugar Industry and were paid a pittance, housed in substandard accommodation and were given the most physically demanding jobs. The kidnapping was outlawed in 1868 and government ships were placed on all Kanakas ships to check that their emigration was voluntary but only in 1901 was the use of island labor completely stopped.

Magnetic Island is 8km offshore, was named by Captain Cook who believed that magnetic fields generated from the granite boulders were causing problems with his compass. It has 12,000 acres of mountainous terrain and is a great place for a day trip here or overnight stay. Sandy bay, great for swimming and snorkeling, has spectacular views from old WWII forts.

Bowling Green Bay National Park, a coastal park, offers much for the self-sufficient guest. Walk along Alligator Creek to see cascades and waterfalls. Stay overnight on the campsite and go spotlighting to see brush tail possums and sugar gliders. Granite Mountains blends a variety of landscapes including saltpans and mangrove country.
